Chemistry Periodic Trends Worksheet - a Simple Explanation

Chemistry Periodic Trends Worksheet - a Simple ExplanationWhen we have understood that analytical methodologies that depend on the chemical bonding properties and composition of materials are subject to the law of chemistry periodic trends worksheet is useful to understand how and why chemical reactions occur. This worksheet helps us to analyze and interpret the results of such analytical methodologies.Chemistry periodic trends worksheet is defined as the technique that helps to represent the behavior of a group of atoms as well as the level of degree of bonding which each of them display. It helps in categorizing the reactions. One of the easiest ways of analyzing the reaction in analytical chemistry is to make a molecular model. This method can be used to break down the chemical substance into its constituent parts. This process assists in understanding the complex behavior of the chemical substance as it progresses through the chemical reaction. Now, the other way is by using x-ray diffraction. The concentration reaction technique is widely used in many analytical chemistry lab by the renowned scientist for its versatility and effectiveness. Here, the chemical substance is in a state where the active state has completely occupied the inactive one. Here, the atoms present in the inactive part of the molecule are more dense and less numerous than those present in the active part. When such a chemical substance is subjected to a high concentration of other chemicals, the molecules are transported in different directions as well as speeds. But, when this condition is not observed, then the chemicals are more likely to self diffuse to form the structure which results in producing various chemicals.Another chemistry periodic trends worksheet is, which happens when the concentration of the chemical substance or is exposed to great heat. In such cases, the molecules dissolve in the solution. As it gets hot, the molecules get oxidized and the form of the chemical substa nce gets altered. Now, there are a few additional compounds which can be included in the periodic trends worksheet. For example, dissociation reactions. When an organic molecule is subjected to heat and pressure, the atom will tend to escape from the molecule.

Are Your Work Expectations Realistic - Introvert Whisperer

Introvert Whisperer / Are Your Work Expectations Realistic - Introvert Whisperer Are Your Work Expectations Realistic? Expectations. We all have them. Our expectations motivate us and drive us to do things both good and bad. We might expect a great time at a party or expect to get bored at grandmas. We have expectations of all sorts at work. We have expectations of our peers, the boss, the company, and even the customers. Our expectations serve us like a yard-stick where we kind of measure people both ahead of time and after an event. We think we know what to expect of others and ourselves, so we check to see if all of that expectation is missed or met. What happens when our expectations are continuously missed? We turn grouchy, to start with. If our expectations are continually abused, it can become the catalyst of unrest and great unhappiness. Depending on your position in the company, you can bear down on the source of your missed expectations with unrelenting focus. We hate to be disappointed. The question is â€" Are your expectations realistic or are you a control freak? It’s good to be good, but it’s annoying to work with someone who wants to be perfect. Besides, it’s just not possible, so you could be unrealistic and also be a real pain in the backside. Here are some questions to ask yourself, as well as thoughts to help gauge your expectations: Are you clear about your expectations? Sometimes we have them, but we can’t exactly pinpoint what they are. If you can get clear first, you can examine them more closely. Did you manufacture your expectations without validation? Especially with others, we sometimes cook up expectations and fail to communicate to get an agreement. Is someone being inconsistent? One day they do things a certain way and the next day, they do them differently. You’re now confused and don’t know WHAT to expect. Time to ask. How do your standards compare to others? There is a fine line between wanting to be the best and being obsessive. Make sure you know where the bar is set for your peers to see if it is within a reasonable range of your own. Do you need to communicate your expectations? We often go about doing our work without really communicating what we need, when we need it and what details go with it. If you haven’t shared those details, you need to have a discussion. Are you getting feedback? You might need to calibrate what your expectations are with someone who can give you some objective feedback and understanding of your environment. Depending on your situation, you could do that with your boss; but if that isn’t an option, consider a respected mentor or peer. Don’t’ seek out your work BFF, as they won’t be objective or candid. Are they impacting your work or career? One sure way to know if your expectations are reasonable is if your work is being negatively impacted by someone else. It’s not unreasonable to expect others to meet quality, quantity, and deadlines as it relates to the work you do. If it turns out that you are being unrealistic about your expectations of others, you probably need to lighten up. If you don’t, you risk making yourself continuously unhappy and disappointed with those around you. It’s hard to feel any kind of kinship with the people you work with when you’re disappointed with their behavior. If your expectations are reasonable  but aren’t being met, then you have some work to do with others. It will be worth it in the long run if you do. Guitar Arpeggios What They Are, and How to Nail Them.

Guitar Arpeggios What They Are, and How to Nail Them. Raise Your Guitar Game with Arpeggios. ChaptersWhat are Arpeggios? Why Play Arpeggios for Rhythm Guitar? How to Play Arpeggios for Rhythm GuitarUsing Arpeggios for Lead Guitar.Advice to Improve Your ArpeggiosIf you want to get better at guitar and one day play classics like Led Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven - or the famous slow rock Still Loving You by Scorpions - you need to work on one guitar technique in particular: arpeggios. But how do you get started? Are there guitar tutorials? What are the basics you need to know before you start to learn guitar? These things are essential for knowing how to play the guitar - for both rhythm guitar and for guitar solos, for music theory and for guitar practice.Arpeggios are a basic guitar technique and one of the first things you should learn as you begin to play.Lots of musicians use them, whether they’re playing rock, hard-rock (Slash), blues (Clapton) or jazz guitar.Arpeggios are one of those tools that are great for jamming and improvising, because they consist of taking the no tes of a chord and playing them separately. So, rather than taking a guitar chord as played altogether, arpeggios all you to play the notes at different times.Whilst this helps you to practice, and understand, your guitar chords, it's more than that too.A Bit of TheoryArpeggios are intimately linked to learning your guitar chords and they are often taught along with the chords themselves. This is particularly true of music theory, in which you are tested, for ear training, on the sound of the major scale - say the C major - and the harmonic structure of the corresponding chord shapes. These arpeggios are the basis of many melodies - including those of your favorite songs - so they are worth learning. If you want to improve your guitar playing technique, the arpeggio of a chord contains the same notes as the chord. Knowing the notes of the chord is a key part of playing its arpeggio. The base note of the chord will normally become the tonic note of the arpeggio. However, there are as ma ny variations of an arpeggio as there are notes in a chord. There are two different types of chords - major and minor. A minor chord has a root or base note, minor third, and perfect fifth, while a major chord has a root, major third, and a perfect fifth. So for either triad, an arpeggio would begin with the base note, followed by the third and then the fifth. For example, in G major the dominant note is G, and it would be followed by B and D.Master the art of fingerpicking with arpeggios. Why Play Arpeggios for Rhythm Guitar?Arpeggios can sometimes be considered finger picking, since it’s a method that consists of playing the strings of your guitar one by one, instead of playing them all at once.  This is a soothing style that is great as a backdrop to singing, as the melody will stay soft and soothing.Specifically, here, we are using this style of guitar for rhythm guitar - i.e. to accompany a voice or another instrument.Knowing how to play arpeggios means that you can play many dif ferent chords and tab sets. Arpeggios complement the other combinations of notes and sounds with their melodious and harmonious background - but without giving that heaviness that strumming would give the piece. In popular guitar music, you can’t really just play arpeggios on their own. Playing arpeggios is a great exercise to practice your guitar, but it may quickly become boring for you and your audience if they aren’t accompanied by other instruments, rhythms, or a singer. But they also may well not. In classical guitar music, whole pieces can be made of arpeggios, and there is nothing boring about it at all. Arpeggios allow you to play very complex chord progressions - that are incredibly interesting to listen to. Check out Bach's Cello Suites for some incredible uses of arpeggios.Arpeggios are often recommended to beginners as an exercise because they help to build up your experience playing guitar and help you to learn more about the instrument and the chromatic and melodic structure of the fretboard. Two Styles of Playing ArpeggiosThere are two different styles of playing arpeggios on your guitar - the vertical and the diagonal method. In the vertical method you play one or two notes per string.  In the diagonal method, you play at least two notes per string, which allows you to play arpeggios based on 4 note chords. Why Play Arpeggios? The loops in arpeggios are repetitive patterns on the neck of the guitar. This is great for any guitar player to practice their technique.Playing arpeggios will help you play faster and more precisely in general - the speed of your playing is very important because each note is played back and forth in a range that goes up and down.Your fingers will become quicker and more agile - think of the amazing Django Reinhardt who played arpeggios with only two fingers! With or Without a PickOften people use a pick to play guitar. However, arpeggios can easily be played with your fingers - in what we refer to as 'fingerstyle'.Each m ethod has its advantages and disadvantages. Playing with a pick will give you more control as you pick strings - however, it is a technique for higher skill levels to cross strings whilst picking quickly. Playing with your fingers will allow you to go faster - as you can cross strings naturally. There’s also the option of using a long fingernail - you’ll get a sound close to that of a pick, but with your fingers. It’s all about using the thumb of your right hand to play the three bass strings - E, A, and D.The nice thing about chords is that you can learn the arpeggios easily too!Next, place each finger on a string.Put your index finger on GMiddle finger on BAnd ring finger on E.Each finger goes in a specific order, and it will be numbered on the guitar tabs:1 for your index finger2 for the middle finger3 for the ring fingerand 4 for your pinky. The Position of Your HandTo gain flexibility and avoid a cramp, the position of your wrist is crucial.  It should be slightly bent, so t hat it almost makes a right angle from your forearm.  However, make sure that you don’t exaggerate the bend; the shape should stay natural.Using Arpeggios for Lead Guitar.By breaking down the chords and learning them as arpeggios, it’ll be easier for you to learn the chords, point blank. However, there is another way to use your arpeggios. Working on arpeggios will help your improve your jamming and composition. During an arpeggio you’re just playing up and down a sole chord, which is a great way to frame your guitar solos - but you don't have to use these arpeggio shapes as whole units. To explain this better, let's have a brief look at the theory of soloing. What is a Guitar Solo? and How is it Relevant to Arpeggios? If you want to play jazz guitar, or blues guitar, you're going to need to learn how to solo and how to improvise. This will come in handy in rock guitar songs too - but most guitar teachers teach it through jazz.We know that you are beginner guitar player, and might not really yet know how to play guitar. However, this stuff, although a little complex, is dead important. When guitar players solo, what are they doing? Just playing random notes? Or is there something special going on here?Every jazz standard, or famous blues song, is based around a chord progression, in which major chords, minor chords, and every other sort of chord that's used follows sequential chord changes. If the piece is in the key of C, say, this C will be the root note of the piece. Now, a C chord is made up of C, E, and G. (The same is true of the C major arpeggio, obviously.) So, when the rhythm section of the jazz band plays a C major chord, the soloist knows that any of the notes C, E, or G will sound nice over the top of this chord. If the soloist plays a C#, however, he might have hit a wrong note. But the C chord will ultimately change (because the best guitar songs or jazz standards ain't gonna stay on the same chord the whole way). Say it moves to E. The notes of t he E arpeggio are E, G#, and B. Now, we have to play some different notes over the top (because playing a G - as you would over a C chord - might sound a little strange).Throughout all these different chord changes, a good guitarist will be able to play notes that make sense in their solos. This happens by learning the arpeggios and turning them into interesting melodic lines that, in the guitar world, we call 'guitar licks' or just 'licks'.If you are serious about soloing, you will need to learn some scales - the pentatonic, the harmonic minor, the blues scale, the mixolydian, if you are feeling out there - as well as the chords that these can be played above. However, the arpeggios provide an incredibly easy way to remember these, as the arpeggios are halfway between a chord - any chords, from jazz chords to open chords, to barre chords - and its corresponding scale.Working on an ArpeggioThere are plenty of ways to practice arpeggios - and if you take a guitar lesson, you will def initely learn more. But here we want to suggest some ways to incorporate your arpeggios into your jazz or blues licks. These are best done when you have the basics of arpeggios down a little.Arpeggios, if you play just three of the notes together, are known as triads. These are like the bare bones of the chord. Try it. You need to make sure you only have one note on each string.Once you have an arpeggio down, try and find different places on the fingerboard where you can play the same arpeggio. So, for the C major arpeggio, where else can you play that?Don’t hesitate to work on both major and minor chords. And, when you are ready, and a seventh in their too.Extended arpeggios - another way to play an arpeggio is to do them all the way up and down your guitar neck. This means that you are not only playing the basic triad, but are stringing a long line of notes, repeating the arpeggio across different octaves.Use all of these elements to develop your guitar techniques. When you pract ice all this stuff, you'llll improve your dexterity and comfort in the whole range on your guitar, and it will help you prepare for improvisation.Advice to Improve Your ArpeggiosJust like anything else, learning arpeggios will take some training, practice, and patience. Whilst they are, in some respects, a basic guitar technique, they are also used in some of the most outrageously complex guitar tricks there are.Teach YourselfYou can easily teach yourself arpeggios by following online guitar tutorials on your computer or tablet. You can find free online guitar lessons on YouTube, for example.Learn Arpeggios with a TeacherAlternatively, you could sign up for private guitar lessons with a qualified teacher. Classes will take place at home over a set period and your instructor can walk you through arpeggios and all the main major, minor, and major seventh chords - either in fingerpicking accompaniment or for soloing. If you’re trying to find a guitar class, get in touch with a local m usic store or check out noticeboards in supermarkets and post offices - there’ll often be ads posted by professionals offering private guitar lessons. A guitar course is a great thing to do, because alongside arpeggios, you will learn all sorts of things from power chords to vibrato to the pentatonic scale.Nail those arpeggios with a guitar teacher. The advantage of taking private guitar lessons is that you can avoid picking up any bad habits and learn the proper way to sit and hold yourself. For acoustic guitars or electric guitars, it's a really excellent way to ensure that you make the most out of your new guitar.A teacher can give you advice and appropriate exercises that will help you gain the dexterity and speed you need to master arpeggios. You can also find other free guitar tutorials (like this article!).Searching for guitar lessons London produces the most results on Superprof. But there is a lot more choice if you're willing to learn online.A last bit of advice:To succee d at arpeggios, here are a few final tips:In accompaniment, work on the articulation of your thumb and fingers to gain agility and speed.Don’t jump in at the deep end, but begin with easy guitar pieces and gradually increase in difficulty.Don’t hesitate to play with a metronome to help regulate your rhythm. At the beginning, you may have to slow down songs to learn them, and then gradually increase your speed to 100%. It's a good way to learn to play songs because it ensures you get your technique right.Don’t limit yourself to just one piece of music - make sure you’re working on a few different pieces and styles of music so that you can really learn all of the different subtleties of arpeggios.Don’t struggle to find time to play - make sure you’re practicing regularly. Just 10 or 15 minutes a day is better than 2 hours all at once at the weekend. An ideal breakdown might be spending 5-10 minutes working on your range and technique and then 10 to 15 minutes working on you r pieces. And finally, stay motivated and keep playing guitar! For bass guitar lessons, see here.

What is it Like to Attend University of California, Irvine

What is it Like to Attend University of California, Irvine The tutors behind Varsity Tutors are not just here to teach theyre sharing their college experiences as well. Nikhita is a Los Angeles tutor specializing in Algebra tutoring, Pre-Calculus tutoring, Chemistry tutoring, and more. She is a senior at University of California, Irvine majoring in Biological Sciences. See what she had to say about her school: VT:Describe the campus setting and transportation options. How urban or safe is the campus? Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Nikhita: UC Irvine is set in the middle of a very suburban town, but the university is very different from the city itself. My experiences of growing up in Irvine were much different from my experiences going to college there. The campus itself is shaped like a circle, making it very accessible, even without a car or a bike. Additionally, having a car or bike is sometimes more of a hassle because its tough to use it around campus. There are shuttle buses available from all the housing communities and around the campus itself, so a car is not necessary. The campus itself is beautifulall of the buildings are built around a giant park. Because the weather is wonderful, there are always students studying, taking naps, or playing sports in the park, creating a very welcoming atmosphere for everyone. Irvine is consistently ranked as one of the safest cities in America and UC Irvine embodies that spirit as well. There are lots of measures in place to ensure students feel safe on or around c ampus. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Nikhita: Because the lectures are relatively large, it is sometimes hard for students to approach them during class. However, professors are always open for questions before, after, and during the lecture. Additionally, they all have office hours which students take advantage of in order to get to know them better. Academic advisors are always available in their offices, by walk-in or by appointment. Teaching assistants teach discussion sections which are much smaller than lectures (usually around 20 people) and also hold their own office hours so students can get all of their questions answered. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Nikhita: UC Irvines freshman dorms are located on campus, making the longest walk from your room to your class 15 minutes. The rooms themselves are very spacious and come with a lot of furniture already in it. There are three dining halls on campus and many restaurants and cafes available. The housing communities host multiple social events, as does each particular hall. Most people make a majority of their friends through their freshman dorm life (myself included) and it was definitely a worthwhile experience! VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Nikhita: UC Irvine has a lot of unique programs and majors available, but the most common major is Biological Sciences. I am a Biological Sciences major and hope to go into the healthcare field, as do most Science majors at UC Irvine. The university knows this and does a really good job supporting the Biology program and specifically tailors the requirements to meet those of pre-professional schools. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Nikhita: Dorm life really helped me make friends as a freshman. I met a lot of amazing people whom Im still friends with. Additionally, getting involved on campus is a major asset. The more organizations you are involved with, the more different types of people you meet. Although the campus is large and may seem intimidating, getting involved in smaller organizations will help you meet a lot of wonderful people. Greek life is fairly predominant on campus but a lot of people are not affiliated. You can definitely still have a social life even if you arent in a sorority or fraternity. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Nikhita: UC Irvine has a great career website, called ZotLink, which hosts hundreds of thousands of job opportunities available for students. I found multiple opportunities on there, including internships, part-time jobs, and full-time jobs, which have helped me grow as a person. Additionally, there are quarterly career and graduate program fairs which help students get exposure to reputable companies and programs. The Career Center also hosts daily workshops and seminars to help students figure out their interests or find programs that will help them achieve their goals. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Nikhita: UC Irvine has two libraries, a huge student center, and study rooms in every dorm suite. There are ample study rooms and independent study areas, but they do tend to get busy during finals week. However, if you want a study room, just make sure to reserve one ahead of time and you shouldnt have any problems. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between? To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Nikhita: Irvine itself is a suburban area but it has many malls, movie theaters, and shopping complexes. Additionally, its central location means it is only ten minutes away from the beach, an hour from the mountains, an hour from Los Angeles, and an hour from San Diego. It is also only four hours from Las Vegas. Because of its location, it can be fun, especially if you know someone with a car. If not, there are also a lot of shopping complexes and a movie theater around campus, and UC Irvine hosts a lot of concerts and social evens itself. Most students stay near campus their first year and then when they get a car, they start venturing off to other locations. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Nikhita: UC Irvine is home to a total of 25,000 students. Therefore, the lower-division class sizes are pretty big (between 200-400 people) but there are also smaller discussion sections with only twenty people. Therefore, it does require extra effort on the students part to make the most of their education and the opportunities they have, but it is very easy to get used to the sizes. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Nikhita: I recently took a Biochemistry class with a very difficult professor. He required students to think a lot and apply the concepts that we learned in what was already a difficult subject. Looking back, although I had to work very hard to do well, the class taught me a lot about the value of getting an education that teaches you skills that you can use later on. College doesnt only teach you facts about the classes youre taking, but also teaches you how to study, how to break out of your comfort zone, and how to enjoy and take control of your own life. Guitar Basics Why is Technique Important

Guitar Basics Why is Technique Important Suzy S. New to the guitar? Getting the basics down including proper positioning and guitar technique is important from the very start. Here, Lowell, IN teacher Blake C.  explains   Over the years, many experienced guitarists have arrived at my studio doorstep asking for help to improve their playing. These guitarists didn’t understand why they were struggling, and merely thought they were stuck in some sort of a slump. However, the slump that these guitarists suffered was not caused by a lack of musical desire or passion or some other emotional hang-up; poor guitar technique led to their difficulties. Correcting poor technique is often more difficult than learning proper technique as a beginner. Of course, students can learn guitar basics first, but even the basics are difficult without proper technique. Therefore, it’s a better idea to avoid developing poor guitar technique; instead, study proper guitar technique with a quality instructor who can assist you with learning guitar the right way the first time. How Do I Know If I Am Using Incorrect Technique? The simplest way is to set-up an in-person or  online video lesson to have your technique reviewed by a professional instructor here at Takelessons.com. If you absolutely cannot take advantage of an instructional session with a Takelessons  instructor, below are a few ideas to improve your current technique and  guitar playing. How Do I Identify Guitar Technique Flaws? Video recording is a good option, but an even better alternative is a bit lower-tech and used at most music conservatories. First, locate or purchase a dressing mirror â€" these can be purchased for $9 or $10 at most local dollar or general merchandise stores. Next, locate or purchase a footstool â€" these can be purchased for approximately $12. Finally, locate or purchase a good practice chair â€" adjustable piano benches are available for about $30. Set Up Your Practice Area   To begin, the footstool is for your left foot if you play guitar right-handed.   For left-handed guitarists, use the footstool for your right foot.   Next, place the mirror directly across from you, setting it up so you can see your hands. Once the mirror is in place, get into a proper sitting position for practicing guitar. Sit toward the front of the bench â€" this will help your posture. Keep in mind, after you have a good handle on using proper technique, your sitting position will not be as critical for performing simple guitar parts or songs. However, when you perform more difficult pieces, youll need to be in a proper sitting position. Many guitarists will sit for difficult pieces: Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, and of course, classical guitarists such as John Williams are usually seated when playing difficult guitar pieces. Next, if you are a right-handed guitarist, place the guitar on your left leg. Left-handed guitarists, place your guitar on your right leg. After the guitar is in place, angle the guitar neck slightly upward, approximately 45 degrees (everyone is different and the angle must suit your body size and shape). Next, try playing a few musical phrases to check the comfort level of the position. Adjust the guitar angle to the natural and relaxed position of your hand, which typically angles slightly upward. This placement of your guitar is for electric and acoustic guitars.   Positioning the guitar in this manner provides the least strain on your hands and body. Here is an example of proper guitar position demonstrated by one of my young students: Now that you are in position, let’s begin by focusing on the position of your left hand. First, you should press with the ball of your thumb on the center of the guitar neck. Your thumb position will change for different styles, pieces of music, and even sections of songs. However, to begin this adventure into correcting guitar technique, press from the ball of your thumb onto the center of the back of the guitar neck. With your thumb in position, extend your fingers forward and take a look at your left hand in the mirror â€" it should create a flat surface that is almost parallel to the plane created by the bottom of the guitar neck. Now, to prepare for a simple, yet very good left-hand exercise, move your hand position to the fifth fret and place your first finger on the “C” note on the fifth fret of the third string. Keep your first finger depressed while you place your second finger on the sixth fret of the third string, which is a “Db” note. Next, keep both your first and second fingers depressed while you place your fourth finger on the eighth fret of the third string, which is an “Eb” note. Make sure that you press with your fingertips and don’t collapse your joints. Notice how the second finger in the image above incorrectly collapses. You will intentionally collapse the joints of your fingers in many instances, but try to avoid it. Next, well dive into some exercises to try check out part two of the article here! Complete Your Assignments With Assignment Help Experts

Complete Your Assignments With Assignment Help Experts Being a student you have to go through various types of educational problems. If only education would be about going to school and coming back then things would have been much simpler. But today the system of education has changed totally. People and the education system are much concerned about other related aspects as well. Starting from school days the load of projects, assignments, dissertation papers and so on has been included in the syllabus. This makes the syllabus much more difficult and also practical. GMAT or GRE 3 Key Questions

GMAT or GRE 3 Key Questions GMAT MBA Admissions Blog I often get asked to help our students decide between taking the GMAT and the GRE. Here are the three most fundamental questions you should be asking as you make your decision. 1. How sure are you that you want to go to business school? There is a logical argument for taking the GMAT simply because you know for sure that you want to go to business school. The rationale is that because the GRE can be used at an increasing number of business schools, but also basically any graduate program, folks that take the GMAT are clearly serious about business school, which is an attractive quality for a business school applicant to have. Of course, if business school is one of several options for you, then the GRE is a good fit. I have heard a different argument though. This argument says if you know for sure you want to go to a top business school, but your GMAT score is low while the rest of your application is strong, then take the GRE. Because business programs report GMAT scores and not GRE scores, your relatively poor standardized test performance won’t impact their reporting and rankings, and thus they’ll be more likely to accept you. I haven’t heard too many admissions consultants who subscribe to this logic, however. And I really don’t buy it either. In fact, because there is a general perception that the GMAT is harder than the GRE (I believe primarily because the quant section really is a bit harder for U.S. born individuals), my view is that students that take the GRE put themselves at a very, very minor risk of being associated with having “chosen to take the easier test. 2. Do you really struggle with math? At the end of the day, the quantitative section of the GMAT is harder than the quantitative section of the GRE. It covers most of the same topics (algebra, arithmetic, geometry, data interpretation, word problems) and a few more (e.g., statistics, number theory), but in more depth, and which more difficult questions and question types (i.e., data sufficiency). The GMAT also doesn’t allow a calculator (the GRE does, although using one on any given question is not always a good idea…), so you have to be comfortable and adept at doing math in your head to score well. While we are MyGuru actually believe that improving your skills to perform well on the math required for standardized tests is actually easier than many people seem to believe, if you really lack confidence and a foundation in math, you may want to focus on the GRE 3. Do you really struggle with verbal questions? Has reading never been your thing? The “verbal” questions used on the GMAT fall into the following buckets: Sentence correction â€" just fix the sentence Reading comprehension â€" testing whether you understand what is being communicated Critical reasoning â€" testing whether you can follow and understand complex arguments and logic The overall emphasis is on the “science of grammar”, which involves understanding rules that can be learned and applied (even by people that don’t tend to be naturally comfortable with reading and writing). By comparison, the verbal section of the GRE covers reading comprehension and critical reasoning, but then instead of sentence correction, it also covers sentence equivalence (are these sentences saying the same thing?) and text completion (what is the right way to finish this thought?). In addition to grammar, scoring well on the GRE verbal section requires a) a large vocabulary and b) a natural intuition with the written word. A lifetime of reading and writing is the one real key to developing a large vocabulary and general intuition about how to apply the written English language. In fact, one of the best ways to prepare for the GRE is simply to read magazines like the Economist (the same is true of the GMAT, by the way). So, if you really struggle with verbal questions and aren’t an avid reader (or perhaps English is your second language) you may want to consider the GMAT Conclusion In a previous article, we laid out some approaches for improving your GMAT reading comprehension score. The gist of that article was that, unfortunately, learning to read and comprehend significantly better than you do today can be a long, hard process. It’s not impossible, but the mix of intuition, logic, grammar, and vocabulary skills needed to understand why one answer is better than another on the verbal portion of a standardized test is actually quite complex. The key to building such skills is to read and write a lot. On the other hand, in that same article and in others on our blogs, we’ve talked about how people that are “just bad at math” actually, well, really don’t need to be. Yes, a lack of confidence and previous focus and training can lead to very low levels of math skills. But, with focused, deliberate practice, we find that many students can quickly build math skills. The same is not quite true for reading comprehension and vocabulary skills. So, in sum, if you are really strong in math but struggle with reading and writing, perhaps you lean towards the GMAT. If the opposite is true, perhaps you lean towards the GRE. But remember, taking the GMAT sends a clear message you are interested in business school, which may provide a very slight “leg up” in the admissions process. This blog article leveraged the thinking in Magoosh’s GRE vs. GMAT infographic.
